The Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County

Day Trip Spotlight: Natural Bridge
Just 20 Minutes from Osceola Mill

One of Virginia’s most iconic landmarks is practically in our backyard—and it’s a must-see. Natural Bridge is just a scenic 20-minute drive from Osceola Mill, and it’s every bit as awe-inspiring as you'd hope. Towering 215 feet high and carved by nature over millennia, this limestone arch is both a natural wonder and a slice of American history. (Fun fact: George Washington allegedly carved his initials into the rock when he was surveying the land. Now that’s a signature move.)

How to Get There
From Osceola Mill, head north on VA-56 and hop on US-11 North. Follow signs for Natural Bridge State Park—it’s well-marked and easy to find, even without GPS. There’s ample parking once you arrive, and the visitor center is your jumping-off point for the trail.

What to Expect: Steps, Strolls & Scenery
Let’s talk terrain. To get down to the base of the bridge, you’ll need to descend a long staircase from the visitor center—around 130 steps. It's not hard, but it’s not a quick skip either, so wear comfy shoes and take your time.

Once you’re at the bottom, the main path is an easy, mostly flat, crushed gravel trail that follows the Cedar Creek. It’s a beautiful, peaceful walk—about a mile round-trip if you go all the way to the Monacan Indian Village and Lace Falls. No intense climbs or rocky scrambles here—just a leisurely walk with lots to see.

Dress the Part
This is the great outdoors, so dress like it. We recommend sturdy shoes, a water bottle, and layers (the shade near the creek can be cool, even in summer). Bug spray and sunscreen aren’t bad ideas either.

More Than Just a Pretty Arch
In addition to the bridge itself, the trail passes a recreated Monacan village (a nod to the region’s Indigenous history), quiet woodlands, and a lovely little waterfall. You can also explore the visitor center museum or grab a snack at the café. Looking for more to do? Nearby attractions include the Caverns at Natural Bridge, the Virginia Safari Park (yep—zebras in Virginia!), and downtown Lexington for shops, food, and Civil War-era history.

Worth the Walk
Whether you're a history buff, a geology nerd, or just someone who appreciates a good view, Natural Bridge delivers. It’s a short trip with big payoff—and a perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon before returning to your cozy suite at the Mill.

Natural Bridge State Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, with the Visitor Center operating from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting. Admission is $9 for adults (ages 13 and up) and $6 for children ages 6 to 12; children under 6 enter free. Parking is available at the visitor center.(Virginia DCR, Go Hike Virginia)

The Visitor Center offers restrooms, a gift shop, and information about the park. From there, a staircase of 137 steps leads down to the Cedar Creek Trail, which provides access to the Natural Bridge and other park features. (One Road at a Time, Virginia DCR)
